What is a domain name?

Domain name is the name by which a resource is known on the Internet. A resource can be a computer, a network, a service, a website.

Every day, domain name is what we say when asked: “What is your web site?” E.g. www.my-business-site.gr.

My-business-site.gr is the domain name.

Anyone can reserve a domain name. As long as it is free. Binding is done through registrars.

The duration of the commitment can be from 1 or more years.

In our example domain name, “.gr” is the so-called TLD (Top-Level Domain).

Today there are hundreds of different TLDs. Others refer to countries and others refer to activities.

Examples of TLDs are: .gr, .com, .net, .eu, .org, .gov, .biz, .edu, .business, etc.

The domain name is today a valuable intangible asset for any business.

What is the URL?

URL = Uniform Resource Locator.

Indicates the address of a resource on the World Wide Web. Colloquially, it has come to be called a web address.

Browsers display the URL of a web page in the address bar.

However, each element (resource) involved in the construction of a website or webpage has its own unique URL. Such elements are e.g.: images, CSS, Javascript, video, etc.

A typical format of a URL is:

https: // www . my-business-site . gr

where:
https:// the protocol used
www the subdomain
my-business-site the domain name
.gr the TLD

What is the www?

We are used to seeing the www, e.g. www.mysite.com, in front of the address of an Internet business (a web site). But what do these 3 letters mean?

www is the initials of the words World Wide Web. In Greek it could be rendered as “World Wide Web“.

It is one of the many services provided through the Internet. Perhaps the most common.

Modern browsers do not display the www when presenting a domain name. But when you copy the address, you will find that it is present.

What is a web server?

Generally you can think of a web server as a powerful computer connected to the Internet that contains the appropriate software (software, programs) to serve content for the web.

Users connect to it as clients and request to be served, i.e. to send them the files (texts, files, programs) it contains, so that they can be displayed as content through the browsers they use on mobile phones, desktops, tablets, etc.

A web server can host one or more web sites. In the latter case we are talking about shared web hosting.

The web server is not just a computer. It needs special software and normally needs to have measures to protect it from attacks.

Frequently asked questions about website, website, website

Website or Site? Which is the right one?

A lot of people call all websites as websites.

This is wrong.

A website consists of several webpages.

E.g.
www.my-business-site.gr is the website.
www.my-business-site.gr/contactus/ is a web page of the website.

I have a website. Am I OK?

Just because you already have a website, doesn’t mean you have a proper website that gives you maximum performance.

From experience, there are too many sites that are not designed properly, or are too old.

These websites are not useful and do not bring in profits.

Don’t waste money thinking that because you have a website you’re okay?

Why is it important for the website to display correctly on mobile phones?

It is important that the website is displayed correctly on mobile devices (mobile phones, tablets) because Google and search engines reward websites that are displayed correctly on mobile phones.

This is because since 2015 there has been a sharp increase in the number of people using mobile phones and tablets to search for information on the Internet.

The website must be designed to be responsive, i.e. to adapt its appearance to small screens in order to be displayed correctly on them.

If the website is not responsive, it does not appear high in search engines and customers do not find it and it is not useful for Internet advertising.

How much does it cost to build a website?

There are thousands of variations on what a website can be. What content to have. What functions to offer.

So it is not possible to say that a website costs X Euros to build.

You can find more at: website construction.

In building a proper website, the 80-20 rule applies.

80% of the work is done 20% of the time and the other 20% of the work is done 80% of the time.

How long does it take to build a website?

Every website is different, because every business is different.

So there is no general rule that determines the time to create a professional website.

It can be from a few days to many months.

The time to create a website depends on many parameters. Some of them are:

  • Is the material for the website content available or does it have to be created from scratch?
  • How relevant is the company to Intermet and how “cooperative” is the company in organizing the structure of the website and its content?
  • What are the requirements for the functions that the website will support?
  • How long does it take to create the website appearance
  • What emphasis will be placed on optimization for search engines
  • How important are the “details”

How do I get first on Google?

Often our clients tell us that they receive phone calls from companies promising them to come first in search engines and especially Google.

If only it were that simple to get a website to the first positions in Google search!!

But why is it important to appear high in Google’s organic search engine results?

Because those who appear on the first page receive the most visits to their websites.

In order to get on the first page of Google or other search engines, a number of conditions must apply:

  • Have a very good website, built properly technically (not just what you see is nice)
  • Display correctly on mobile phones and mobile devices
  • Update the website regularly
  • The content of the website should be useful. Solve questions to those who visit it
  • Use the right keywords in a natural way
  • Articles should be detailed and contain useful and unique information
  • The content should not be copied
  • Have high traffic
  • Many people “talking” about you (backlinks)
  • Have the website connected to Google services
  • Have done good and continuous SEO
  • And to make it even better, the first page of Google has only 10 positions. And some of them are already occupied by big websites or your competitors.

All of the above costs!

So don’t be fooled!

Yes you can get on the first page of Google. But after methodical and hard work that comes at a cost. But it is not easy, nor is it automatic. And it will take time.

It is not done by saying yes to a phone call!!

What is CSS?

CSS stands for Cascading Styling Sheets.

They are effectively “instructions” for formatting and displaying HTML elements on a page.

For example, through CSS we can:

  • We choose which words will be displayed in bold and in a different colour.
  • Which elements of HTML will appear inside other elements. How they will be organized,
  • How headings will be formatted in HTML.
  • What color will the links have and how they will behave when we place the cursor over them.

  • Which elements of HTML will appear inside other elements. How they will be organized,
  • How headings will be formatted in HTML.
  • What color will the links have and how they will behave when we place the cursor over them.

It is a complex pseudo-language, essential for the appearance of any website or application. It is constantly being developed.

What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language.

It is a “code” that originally allowed simple text to be formatted so that it could be “read” and presented on a computer screen (and much later a mobile phone or tablet) in a way that conveys information and images.

Along the way, it was enriched with many new features. Now the HTML5 version is used.

It’s the basis for displaying everything you see on the Internet, no matter which app you use (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Website, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.).

For the “translation” and presentation of HTML texts as pages on the Internet, programs called web browsers are used. Typical examples are Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Safari, Brave, etc.

What is Javascript?

Javascript is a scripting programming language.

It was originally developed to provide more control over the way HTML pages were displayed in browsers. That’s why it was originally run (executed) only in browsers. Along the way, through technologies such as node.js and meteor.js, it also runs on servers.

Because it runs mostly locally, if you’re using old computers or mobile phones, you’ll notice that they may be slow to display some pages or applications. That’s because they can’t execute the Javascript code they contain fast enough.

It is often confused with the Java programming language which is something completely different.

What is CMS?

CMS stands for Content Management System. In Greek: Content Management System.

In the early days of the Internet, to get a website you had to literally write the HTML code by hand.

Along the way, CMS applications were developed which allow for easier creation and management of a website.

They usually consist of two sections.

What the visitor sees (Front End) and we call our website and
The management part (Back End) from which we create the website. Only users with special passwords have access to this section.

CMS are programs, applications written in various programming languages (PHP, Python, Java, C#, Javascript).

The most popular ones today are WordPess, Drupal, Joomla.

The good thing about a CMS is that the client can relatively easily manage the website of his business himself. Add content, update existing content, without having programming knowledge.

Each business, with the help of an expert and depending on its financial capabilities and the products or services it sells, can choose the combination of advertising activities on the Internet that suit it.

Why should I advertise on the Internet?

It pays to advertise on the Internet because your prospects and customers are there!

They use the Internet every day to find the services and products you offer.

You need to advertise on the Internet because your competitors are already doing it.

Because in many cases it’s the only way they can find you and get to know you.

It’s worth advertising on the Internet because it has immediate results, relatively low cost and will help you become better as a business!

How much does it cost to advertise on the Internet?

That’s a good question!

Based on our experience, we would rephrase the question to “how much is it worth investing in Internet advertising”.

The answer depends on many parameters. But the main ones are:

  • What profit margin do I have
  • How intense is the competition?
  • How many sales can I make
  • How long can I advertise for?
  • What profit margin do I have
  • How intense is the competition?
  • How many sales can I make
  • How long can I advertise for?

For example, if you are selling a product or service from which the profit is hundreds or thousands of Euros per sale, the scope to invest more money in advertising is much greater than those whose profit is a few Euros.

In the first case, you can invest much more in Internet advertising.

Again from experience, we can tell you that the minimum amount worth investing is around 250 Euros per month.

Is it worth advertising on the Internet?

Definitely Yes!

By advertising properly and economically on the Internet, people quickly learn what you offer in terms of products and services.

But there are many pitfalls in online advertising. It takes study and persistence. Otherwise you risk throwing your money away to no avail.

Why is it important for the website, online store to be displayed correctly on mobile phones?

It is important that the website or the online store is displayed correctly on mobile devices (mobile phones, tablets) because Google and search engines give a premium to websites that are displayed correctly on mobile phones.

This is because since 2015 there has been a sharp increase in the number of people using mobile phones and tablets to search for information on the Internet.

The website or online store must be designed to be responsive, i.e. to adapt its appearance to small screens in order to be displayed correctly on them.

If the website or online store is not responsive, it will not appear high in search engines and customers will not find it and it is not useful for Internet advertising.
