What is a domain name?<\/h3>\n\n

Domain name is the name by which a resource is known on the Internet. A resource can be a computer, a network, a service, a website. <\/p>\n\n

Every day, domain name is what we say when asked: “What is your web site?” E.g. www.my-business-site.gr.<\/p>\n\n

My-business-site.gr is the domain name.<\/p>\n\n

Anyone can reserve a domain name. As long as it is free. Binding is done through registrars. <\/p>\n\n

The duration of the commitment can be from 1 or more years.<\/p>\n\n

In our example domain name, “.gr” is the so-called TLD (Top-Level Domain).<\/a><\/p>\n\n

Today there are hundreds of different TLDs. Others refer to countries and others refer to activities. <\/p>\n\n

Examples of TLDs are: .gr, .com, .net, .eu, .org, .gov, .biz, .edu, .business, etc.<\/p>\n\n

What is the URL?<\/h3>\n\n

URL = Uniform Resource Locator.<\/p>\n\n

Indicates the address of a resource on the World Wide Web. Colloquially, it has come to be called a web address. <\/p>\n\n

Browsers display the URL of a web page in the address bar.<\/p>\n\n

However, each element (resource) involved in the construction of a website or webpage has its own unique URL. Such elements are e.g.: images, CSS, Javascript, video, etc.<\/p>\n\n

What is the www?<\/h3>\n\n

We are used to seeing the www, e.g. www.mysite.com, in front of the address of an Internet business (a web site). But what do these 3 letters mean?<\/p>\n\n

www<\/strong> is the initials of the words World Wide Web<\/strong>. In Greek it could be rendered as “World Wide Web<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n

It is one of the many services provided through the Internet. Perhaps the most common. <\/p>\n\n

What is a web server?<\/h3>\n\n

Generally you can think of a web server as a powerful computer connected to the Internet that contains the appropriate software (software, programs) to serve content for the web.<\/p>\n\n

Users connect to it as clients and request to be served, i.e. to send them the files (texts, files, programs) it contains, so that they can be displayed as content through the browsers they use on mobile phones, desktops, tablets, etc. <\/p>\n\n
